Shirley Theobald, 94, of Oelwein passed away Saturday February 8, 2020 at Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM on Wednesday February 12, 2020 at the Geilenfeld-Buehner Funeral Home. Funeral Services will begin at 10:30 AM on Thursday February 13, 2020 at the Funeral Home. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery at Oelwein. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mercy Living Plus or the Oelwein Public Library.
Shirley Mae Hintz was born May 2, 1925 in Oelwein to parents Harold and Violet (Utley) Hintz. She graduated from Oelwein High School and then attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids. On November 21, 1944 she was united in marriage with John “Jack” Theobald at the San Diego Naval Air Station. Shirley was a voracious reader, a master at crossword puzzles, a skilled seamstress and knitter, as well as a homemaker. At 94 years of age, she was lucid, making her own decisions, and died peacefully with her family at her side. She was a quiet and kind soul. Her family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Mercy Living Plus for all the years of love and care they gave to Shirley.
Left to celebrate Shirley’s life are her children: John (Susan) Theobald of Midwest City, OK, Mike (Jodie) Theobald of Iowa City, Peter (Jill) Theobald of Spokane, WA; Bridget (Eric) Hartmann of Cedar Falls; and her son-in-law Harvey Silverberg; her grandchildren: Joe (Lori) Silverberg, Dan (Meg) Silverberg, Ben (Caitlin) Silverberg, Lara (Fadi) Nasr, Genny (Todd) Court, Ryan (Jackie) Theobald, Leigha (Rico) Taylor, Abbie Nieprawski, Drew (Megan Morgan) Theobald, Rohan (Morgen) Theobald, Ahbleza (Roxanne) Theobald, Alex (Anna) Hartmann, Sam Hartmann and Megan (Jake) Ferguson; 23 great-grandchildren; her sister and brother-in-law Mary Ann and Ken Sahs; her brother-in-law Tom Theobald; her sister-in-law Wendy Theobald; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Harold (1968) and Violet (1988); her husband Jack (2015); her daughter Susan Silverberg (2015); her siblings: William Hintz (2007) and Jackie Hintz (1937).
