LaVerne Oltrogge, 92, of Oelwein passed away on Saturday December 29, 2018 at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM on Wednesday January 2, 2019 at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein with Military Honors by the American Legion Post #9 of Oelwein at 7:00 PM, followed by Honors by the Buchanan County Fire Dept. Honor Guard. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM on Thursday January 3 at Grace United Methodist Church in Oelwein. Interment will be in Stanley Cemetery. A memorial fund had been established.
LaVerne Alfred Oltrogge was born February 22, 1926 on his family farm in rural Maynard, IA to parents Alfred and Clara (Reinhardt) Oltrogge. He attended country school in rural Fayette County. LaVerne served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. On April 14, 1962 he was united in marriage with Lorena Livezey at Grace United Methodist Church in Oelwein.
LaVerne worked his family farm and later was employed as a meat cutter with Keniston’s in Oelwein where he retired after 21 years. He also served on the Stanley Fire Dept. for 37 years and the Stanley City Council for over 6 years. LaVerne was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post #9 in Oelwein. He was a past member of the American Legion in Aurora.
Left to celebrate LaVerne’s life is his wife Lorena and his son Darrel Oltrogge (Heather Burrows) of Clermont. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son David and his sister Frances Newton.
