Ken Magsamen
January 22, 1949 - September 15, 2024

Kenneth Louis Magsamen, 75, of Oelwein, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2024, peacefully at his home. Knights of Columbus Rosary services will begin at 3:30 PM on Friday September 20, 2024 with visitation following from 4-7 PM at the Geilenfeld-Buehner Funeral Home in Oelwein. Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 AM on Saturday September 21, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery at Oelwein. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.

Kenneth Louis Magsamen was born on January 22, 1949 in Oelwein, the son of Alphonse and Anna (Koch) Magsamen. He graduated from East Buchanan High school, Winthrop, IA in 1967, and received his AA from Kirkwood Community College in 1970.  Ken served honorably in the Army National Guard from 1970 to 1976.

On November 14, 1970, Ken was united in marriage to Sandra Leonard at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lamont, IA. Three children were born to this union. He worked at Chicago North Western Railroad, owned and operated Magsamen RCA, Signode, and MHI. Following retirement, Ken was a transport driver for Oelwein Health Care Center, Frye Farms, and City Laundering.

Ken was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and Knights of Columbus in Oelwein, IA.  He also served on the Sacred Heart School Board, Plaza Board, and was an Oelwein Ambassador. He had such a big heart, and a great sense of humor. He doesn’t know a stranger, and his laughter was contagious.


Ken enjoyed Car Cruises, Motorcycle rides, Bid Euchre, 500, UNO with his grandchildren, tennis, volleyball, and softball. Ken was a Classic car lover, and he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sandra Magsamen of Oelwein; two daughters and one son: Kari (Judson) Eddy of Johnston, IA, Lindi (Duane) Kelley of Shawnee, KS, and Kenneth (Brittney) Magsamen of Oelwein IA; four grandchildren: Jack, Carver, Liam and Sawyer; three sisters: Monica (Larry) Newell of Elkhorn, NE, Arlene Bateman of Ankeny, IA, Lucy (Myles) Dunlap of Pueblo, CO, one brother Donnie (Debra) Magsamen of Independence, IA and many nieces and nephews.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; two siblings: Alphonse Magsamen and Anna Marie Magsamen; his father-in-law, Miles Leonard; and his brother in-laws: Marvin Bateman, Tim Kubicek and Francis Leonard.
