My first real job while in high school was at Sears, where Kate was my boss. Initially terrified of her, I came to respect and appreciate her. She taught me what it meant to "show up" - be ready and willing to do your job or be gone! She was tough but fair, with a hint of a smile for you when you did it right. I learned much and gained maturity from Kate while there, for which I've always been grateful.
When our mother died she was the first to call with condolences and food to send over.
My sympathies to Kate's family and friends.
