Jose Aniceto Garcia, 91, of Maynard, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2015 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, IA. Visitation will be from 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein. Funeral services will then follow at 1:30 PM with his son, Pastor Joe Luis Garcia officiating. He will be laid to rest in Long Grove Cemetery at Maynard, IA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
Jose (Cheto or Shorty) was born in Waterloo, IA on April 17, 1924 to parents Juan and Guadalupe “Christina” (Nava) Garcia. On February 22, 1952 he was united in marriage with Juana Vasquez in Guanajuato, Mexico. He was self employed as a skilled plasterer, operating Garcia Plastering. Jose and his wife, Juana, also founded the El Refugio Church located in Tijuana, Mexico, in 1967. He was a Minister of the church until his retirement in 1982.
Left to celebrate Jose’s life is his wife, Juana; his sisters: Belen Villasenor of Hacienda Heights, CA and Maria Reyes (Morena) Gutierrez of Tijuana, MX; his brother: Esteban Gutierrez of Tijuana, MX; his children: Joe Luis (Sylvia) Garcia of Chula Vista, CA, Alberto (Bones) Garcia of Tijuana, MX, Elena (Jorge) Amezqua of San Ysidro, CA, Aniceto Garcia of Oelwein, IA, Sylvia (Don) Westendorf of Maynard, IA, Abel Garcia of Oelwein, IA and Patricia Garcia of Oelwein ,IA; and his adopted sons: Joe (Vicki) Gutierrez of Costa Mesa, CA and Alberto Gutierrez of Sacramento, CA; 26 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
Jose was preceded in death by his parents; his son Juan Garcia; his sister Elena Ceballos and his brother Daniel Garcia.
