David D. Moore, 77, of Oelwein went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 6, 2024.

Born December 21, 1946 in Decorah, son of Max and Maxine (Snyder) Moore.

Living in Hawkeye, he graduated from North Fayette High School in West Union, with the class of 1965. He was a wrestler for North Fayette throughout high school.

David was united in marriage to Garland Evans of Sumner on November 28, 1965 at the Methodist Church in Sumner.

Very soon after he was drafted into the U.S. Army and left for basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. Garland went with him for training in communications at Ft. Monmouth, NJ. After a few more months training at Ft. Gordon, GA, he was home on leave for the birth of his first son on March 14, 1967 and left for Vietnam three weeks later, serving throughout the Tet Offensive. Then his family joined him as he joined a few soldiers running the communications site at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. There he was nominated for a Bronze Star, but received an Army Commendation Medal.

His second son was born there before they returned to Sumner in 1969. He served in the Reserves and National Guard after that.

In March of 1970 they moved to Oelwein. He was employed as an Engineer Clerk/ Engineer Assistant for Interstate Power Company in Oelwein and Decorah until he retired from Alliant Energy. They also owned and operated Moore’s Christian Book And Coin store in Oelwein for several years. After retiring he managed a car wash for three years. Always a hard worker, he had many part time jobs throughout his life.

He was always very active in his Church, serving on many boards, committees, teaching Sunday School, and doing repair work, etc. He always did what he could to help others.

He played and pitched slow pitch softball in Oelwein for many years and still would not hesitate to join in helping the young kids with a game, usually pitching and often fumbling the ball a bit to give the youngest ones a chance to get on base.

One of Dave and Garland’s favorite things to do was ride their Harley together. Just a few days before his passing they enjoyed a nice afternoon ride together.

Dave had a great appreciation for cars, antiques, and historical items. He was president of the Oelwein Area Historical Society for around 40 years. He worked hard to help keep the Historical Society Museum open. He was proud of what they have on display there.

With the Historical Society, Dave decided to try to save the historic 1923 Coliseum Ballroom. The building was ready for condemnation. With his talent for restoration, his love for music, along with the help of a few family and friends they were successful. The Ballroom came alive with dances and events under his management. He had a good singing voice and often sang a couple songs on Friday night during Hootenanny. He always enjoyed a few dances with his wife.

If you didn’t know Dave when you came, you would know him when you left!

Family meant the world to him and he would do anything that he could to help.

Dave is survived by his wife Garland; his children: David (Shelly) Moore of Iowa Falls, Rod (Angie) Moore of Vinton, Stewart, Susie, and Joshua Moore all of Oelwein; Sisters: Mae (Tom) Schmitt of Jackson Junction and Linda (Randy) Alber of Boone; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Roger (Diane) Evans of Lincoln, NE, sister-in-laws: Judy Knox of Waterloo and Joyce (Jerry) Riker of Cedar Falls; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Max and Robert Moore, Arnold and Ted Kruse Jr.; sisters Ruby Moore and Pearl (Moore) Barker; sister-in-law Mary Moore and a Grandson Zach Druger.
